Best Things to Do in Bangkok in Just A Day!

For most people, planning a Thailand trip takes months. But believe us when we say – you can experience the best of Bangkok in just one day!

(Of course, if you have more time, you can slow down, soak it all in, and maybe even extend your Thai adventure beyond Bangkok. But if you’ve got just a weekend and feel like hopping over to this buzzing city—don’t think twice!)

On our way back from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to New Delhi, we decided to squeeze in a day in Bangkok. At first, we weren’t sure how much we could actually do. But thanks to our Airbnb host, who mapped out the ferry route for us, we quickly realized how easy it was to get around the city – and just like that, our whirlwind Bangkok adventure began!

Here’s What We Did in a Day in Bangkok!

Our day, of course, began with a hearty breakfast! Bangkok’s food scene is top-notch—whether it’s street food, a cozy café, a market stall, or a fine-dining spot, your taste buds are in for a treat. As we stepped out of our BnB, we spotted street stalls sizzling with oversized sausages, chicken satay, and crabmeat balls. (Most of these were priced between 10 to 20 Baht—pretty reasonable considering the generous portions!) Being the foodies that we are, we couldn’t resist and indulged in as much as we could.

Since it was a weekday, the usual office crowd had already gathered at the pier, and we knew we were in for a delightful ride—watching the locals go about their day as we cruised towards our destination. That’s the beauty of taking local transport—you get to experience a slice of everyday life, observe the rhythms of a place, and of course, save a few bucks along the way!

As we neared our stop, the sight of a towering white structure standing in all its glory took my breath away. Wat Arun, with its intricate details and steep elegance, was just as mesmerizing as I had imagined. Hopping off the ferry, we grabbed our tickets and wandered inside, completely awestruck by this architectural marvel.

Wat Arun, or the Temple of Dawn, gets its name from Arun, the Hindu Sun God, often symbolized as the radiance of the rising sun. The intricate artwork on the temple walls is absolutely stunning, but what truly thrilled us was the sight of 108 Golden Buddha statues surrounding the main temple—it felt almost surreal.

Our next stop was Wat Pho, just across the river. A quick ferry ride took us straight from Wat Arun to this famous temple, best known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. While Wat Arun had been relatively quiet, Wat Pho was bustling—with flocks of tourists trying to snap the perfect selfie with the massive golden Buddha!

Wat Pho is home to Thailand’s largest collection of Buddha images, including the iconic 46-meter-long Reclining Buddha. It’s also one of Bangkok’s oldest temples and was once a key center for public education in Thailand. The temple’s marble illustrations and inscriptions—designed for public learning—are so significant that UNESCO has recognized them in its Memory of the World Program. Adding to its rich history, Wat Pho houses a school of Thai medicine and is famously known as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage, which is still taught and practiced here.

As we were about to leave, we stumbled upon a group of school kids rehearsing in the courtyard. Our curiosity got the best of us, and after chatting with a supervising monk, we learned that they were preparing a play for the King’s upcoming visit. Watching them twirl around in colorful masks was an unexpected and heartwarming moment—one of those little travel surprises that stick with you.

By then, it was late afternoon, and hunger had officially kicked in. Luckily, right next to the temple, a narrow lane led us to a handful of cozy cafés. We picked one that had just the right vibe – inviting, laid-back, and promising a delicious Thai feast.

After a satisfying lunch, it was time to hop into a tuk-tuk and make our way to the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, home to the legendary Emerald Buddha. If there’s one place in Bangkok that exudes pure royalty, this is it. Every corner of the palace complex is dripping with grandeur, and the best way to truly soak it all in is by grabbing an audio guide—it walks you through the intricate history and symbolism behind the architecture.

By the time we wrapped up our palace visit, the sun had started to dip, and we only had a few hours left in the city. Naturally, we did what anyone in Bangkok would—hit the markets for some last-minute souvenir shopping! Right next to the closest pier to the Grand Palace, we found a lively market selling everything from bags and shoes to quirky postcards and keychains. A quick shopping spree later, our bags were heavier, but our hearts were full.

And just like that, our whirlwind Bangkok adventure came to an end as we made it to Don Mueang Airport, right on time! Sure, we missed out on the city’s famous nightlife (which we’d heard endless tales about), but that just gives us another reason to come back. This day trip may have been short, but it was unforgettable—our first taste of the Thai capital, and certainly not the last!

Tips To Remember While Exploring Bangkok

  • Bargain, bargain, bargain! When shopping for souvenirs, don’t settle for the first price—they usually hike it up for tourists. A little negotiation goes a long way!

  • Dress appropriately for temple visits. Cover your shoulders and knees—no sleeveless tops or shorts, or you won’t be allowed inside the Wats. Men, full-length pants are a must!

  • Embrace the local warmth. If you’re traveling solo, don’t be afraid of strangers! Thai people are some of the friendliest, and you’ll often be greeted with warm smiles if you make eye contact.

  • Street food is a must! Honestly, we loved it even more than what we had in restaurants—don’t skip out on trying local favorites.

  • Treat yourself to Thai Royal Ice Cream. Trust us, it’s an absolute delight!

Have you been to Bangkok? We’d love to hear about your favorite experiences! Also, if you have any Thailand recommendations, drop them our way – we’re always adding to our travel bucket list!
