It’s truly surreal to think that this place was once a part of India and that my grandmother hails from here. Throughout my childhood, I would hear captivating stories about Bangladesh from her, yet I couldn’t help but notice the lack of information about the country in my school’s history and geography lessons. They barely touched upon significant aspects, only mentioning events like the Chittagong Armoury Raid and briefly describing the Padma and Brahmaputra Rivers.
Despite the limited exposure, I found myself strangely fascinated by Bangladesh. Fortunately, a friend of mine relocated to Dhaka for work, which allowed me to learn more about this neighboring country and its rich culture. Eventually, my curiosity led me to plan a visit to Bangladesh. With the help of my aunt, I reached out to a distant cousin of my grandmother, who shared fascinating tales about her birthplace and how much it has evolved over the years – and it felt like going back to the roots.
