The Belgadia Palace: Luxurious Staycation At It’s Best

by RiyankaUpdated on August 19, 2022April 14, 2021
the belgadia palace

For most of the Bengalis living in Kolkata, trips to Odisha begin and end in Puri. Occasionally, it extends up to the Konark Temple or Chilka Lake. I’m no exception in this case! That’s why, when I first heard of the Belgadia Palace, I was …

However, over time, I developed a deep appreciation for it, recognizing the inherent beauty that it adds to one's appearance. Now, it has become a personal tradition for me to carry at least one saree during my travels. Coming from a Bengali family, I've been surrounded by women who effortlessly adorned sarees, both at home and out in the world.

As fashion trends evolved, I witnessed the women in my life confidently traveling to various destinations, mountains, and beaches alike, all while gracefully draped in sarees. Their ability to redefine the conventional notions of comfort left a lasting impression on me. Adapting to their unique sense of style took some time, but I am grateful that I eventually embraced their influence, especially when it comes to exploring new places wrapped in the elegance of 9yards.

I owe this to the two most important women in my life - Maa & Pishi. Their influence has shaped not only my style but also my outlook on embracing tradition and beauty, even amid worldly adventures.

I think I can take another trip to Bali just for t I think I can take another trip to Bali just for the food! 🍲

The island's food landscape, a fusion of Balinese traditions and global influences, left me drooling. Whether navigating the lively markets of Ubud or indulging in the tranquility of Canggu's beachfront eateries, each locale presented a tempting array of dishes. I savored the aroma of satay skewers crisping on open grills, delighted in the rich flavors of rendang curries infused with coconut and spices, and relished the fragrant nasi goreng (fried rice).

Here's a glimpse of what I binged on (and I'm not guilty!). 🙈

"So, how was Bali?" - you'd ask. 😀 "It was good "So, how was Bali?" - you'd ask. 😀
"It was good but I didn't get to explore much," I'd say. 🫠

Then, I'll tell you that I went there for @bhxproject and the conversations will follow.

For those who know me well, know that I'm not really a 'touch-and-go' person. I prefer to stay at one place, walk around the streets until I have the map etched in my mind, talk to the natives to know their stories, eat the local delicacies, and spend hours soaking in the beauty of where I am. Now, before I plan yet another trip to bask on the beaches and wander around the temples of the island, here's what actually happened over the last week.

I took an 8-hour flight to spend a crazy week with a bunch of strangers (read: friends!), barely knowing what awaited on the other side. I met some of them at the airport in Bali and took a 1.5-hour road trip to our stay. It wasn't the usual road trip - we were still trying to break the ice, had small talks, and I even dozed off in between!

I shared my room with this beautiful human, who appeared to be very different from me in the first go - but soon, we found our shared love for wine and cheese (and more!).

Later that evening, the first step of unfolding happened, and I witnessed a bunch of people, placing their hearts on the table, without worrying about being judged. And then, we grabbed our drinks, laughed till our stomachs ached, and danced to clichéd Bollywood music like there's no tomorrow!

And, that was it. What happened next is a story of bonding, love, warm hugs, sharing ideas, sleepless nights, endless walks, meaningful conversations, playing weird games, and connecting the dots.

I'm glad I didn't get to explore Bali much, but I got to explore myself 💌
Here's to all the amazing people I met (and you know who you are!).

This morning was all about tasting coffee in Ubud This morning was all about tasting coffee in Ubud ☕

Luwak coffee, also known as "kopi luwak," hails from the enchanting island of Bali, adding a touch of exotic allure to the world of coffee connoisseurs. Renowned for its unique production process, this exceptional brew begins its journey in the lush Balinese coffee plantations.

The civet, a small mammal native to the region, selectively consumes the ripest coffee cherries, digesting the outer pulp while the beans remain untouched. After being excreted, these beans are meticulously collected, thoroughly cleaned, and expertly roasted. The result is a remarkably smooth and nuanced coffee with low acidity, embodying the essence of Bali's rich and diverse landscapes.

Luwak coffee not only captivates the taste buds but also offers a rare and fascinating glimpse into the harmonious relationship between nature and craftsmanship in the heart of Bali.

In the cradle of Kashmir's peaks, where emotions s In the cradle of Kashmir's peaks, where emotions soar high,
Autumn unfolds a symphony, each leaf a heartfelt sigh.
Saffron and gold paint the Chinars in hues so deep,
A traveler's soul stirred, as if in a dreamy sleep.

The Dal Lake mirrors sunsets, a palette so divine,
Kashmir whispers tales and emotions that intertwine.
With every rustle of leaves, feelings cascade like falls,
In the heart of this beauty, a traveler's spirit calls.

The flowers form a lush carpet, sprawling near the small ridged fields, with almond trees standing bare-branched and leafless among them. The backdrop features low-back mountains bordering the horizon, while in the distance, golden chinar trees create vibrant rows.

The walnut trees stand leafless, their delicate branches forming bare silhouettes, and the only touch of green emanates from the willows, drooping near the fields. On our journey from Srinagar to Kokernag, we paused at Pampore to wander down the violet carpet. I had read somewhere that 'Pampore in Autumn is straight out of Iranian poetry,' and I couldn't agree more.

Kashmir, through the eyes of Nargis 🍁 What com Kashmir, through the eyes of Nargis 🍁

What comes to your mind when you think of Kashmir? Mountains and meadows? Dal Lake and Shikaras? War or Wazwan?

As long as I remember, the textbooks mentioned the beauty of the valley (and often termed it as 'Heaven on Earth') and the News channels talked about the unrest in the valley. I remember watching 'Mission Kashmir' when I was in 3rd standard, and that's how my ideas shaped up. It took me years to find out the true stories about Kashmir, and even longer, to know about the lives of the people living there.

In 2021, when I went to Kargil and Drass, I was stunned by the mesmerizing beauty of both places and felt sad knowing that they once served as battlefields. I visited Srinagar also during that trip, although briefly.

Then, I got to know Nargis. And it was like getting to know Kashmir through a completely new lens. Last year, she took me to Gool (and she swears that it's the most beautiful place that she's ever been to) and Margan Top, which were just postcard-perfect. And this time, she took me to Kokernag, Achabal, and Dachigam, away from the chaos of Srinagar.

From the history of the places to their current socio-political status, Nargis shared facts that one can barely find in books. She told me stories of her daily struggles, about a life that not many of us can actually think of, about a popularity that she hides under her pillow and sleeps over it.

I don't really know how to show gratitude to life, but I'm extremely grateful that my paths crossed with people like her.

For me, Kashmir will always be synonymous to Nargis.

Photo dump from Bangladesh 🇧🇩 Growing up in Photo dump from Bangladesh 🇧🇩

Growing up in a Bengali middle-class household, the very mention of Bangladesh held a special place in my heart. It carried the echoes of my grandmother's childhood tales and long-hidden family secrets inscribed on crumbled pieces of paper. After embarking on four journeys to this land, my feelings towards Bangladesh have become a complex blend of affection and exasperation. While I eagerly anticipate indulging in a generous serving of Kacchi Biriyani, I can't help but feel irked by the ceaseless chaos and commotion of Dhaka.

It was this very paradox that led me to share with Jishu my desire to celebrate Mahalaya far from the maddening bustle of Dhaka. We contemplated our options and eventually settled on a road trip to Mawa, seeking a serene escape from the city's tumultuous rhythm. I'm glad we did that :)
