48 Hours in Koh Phi Phi Islands, Thailand | A Trip With My Best Friend

“And me, I still believe in paradise. But now at least I know it’s not some place you can look for, ’cause it’s not where you go. It’s how you feel for a moment in your life when you’re a part of something, and if you find that moment… it lasts forever…” – The Beach, Alex Garland.

It was a couple of years ago that I first watched the movie that sparked my wanderlust and convinced me to add Maya Bay to my travel bucket list. I didn’t know when I’d make it there, but I knew I had to see it with my own eyes someday. Later, when a friend gifted me the book, I found myself returning to its pages, reliving the moment Richard and his friends swam across the open sea in search of the mysterious paradise they had only heard whispers about.

That dream finally felt real the day we boarded a speedboat from Krabi to Phi Phi Don. Butterflies fluttered in my stomach as the boat cut through the Andaman Sea. The emerald water shimmered under the tropical sun, waves crashed against the hull and sprayed cool droplets across our faces, and the salty breeze carried with it the promise of adventure. Around me, fellow travellers wore the same unmistakable expression, a mix of excitement, anticipation, and childlike wonder, as we all waited to set foot on Phi Phi and get one step closer to Maya Bay.

“If I’d learned one thing from travelling, it was that the way to get things done was to go ahead and do them. Book a ticket, get a visa, pack a bag, and it just happens” – The words from the book kept echoing in my mind, as I could see the thin strip of golden sand from a distance!

Get To Know Koh Phi Phi Islands, Thailand

I couldn’t think of a better description than this. So, to put it in the words of Lonely Planet“With their curvy, bleached beaches and stunning jungle interiors, Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh – collectively known as Koh Phi Phi – are the darlings of the Andaman Coast. Phi Phi Don is a hedonistic paradise where visitors cavort by day in azure seas and party all night on soft sand. In contrast, smaller Ko Phi Phi Leh is undeveloped and hotel-free, its coral reefs and crystal-clear waters overseen by soaring jagged cliffs, and visited only on the day or sunset cruises.”

Tucked between the bustling tourist hubs of Phuket and Krabi, Koh Phi Phi has long captured the imagination of travellers. Its appearance in films and documentaries has only added to its allure, turning this island group into one of Thailand’s most sought-after destinations. While its legendary nightlife and laid-back island vibe draw countless visitors, it is the breathtaking scenery and the iconic Maya Bay that remain its biggest attractions.

Located about 43 km west of the Krabi coast in southern Thailand, this small archipelago is made up of six islands: Koh Phi Phi Don, Koh Phi Phi Leh, Koh Bida Nok, Koh Bida Nai, Koh Phai (Bamboo Island), and Koh Young (Mosquito Island). Of these, Koh Phi Phi Don is the only inhabited island and the largest in the group. It serves as the gateway to the archipelago and is where you’ll find everything from luxury resorts and boutique hotels to backpacker hostels, lively night markets, tattoo parlours, bustling street food stalls, waterfront cafés, and fine dining restaurants.

Things To Do In 48 Hours in Koh Phi Phi

The islands are pretty small, and there are no motorable roads – you’d either have to walk around Phi Phi Don (the main island, where people stay) or take a longtail boat/ speedboat to explore and hop around different islands. Here’s what we did in 48 hours around Phi Phi Islands!

Day 1

Once we reached the pier, we noticed representatives from all the resorts holding placards with the names of the guests written on them. Amidst the crowd, we did find the person who had come from The Cobble Beach Resort, which we had booked for our stay!

The resort is about a 15-minute walk from the pier, and I was already loving the vibes of the island, as we walked down these narrow alleys with shops selling everything – from beer buckets to freshly caught lobsters & prawns and fancy souvenirs! Our resort was on a cliff (which required a bit of uphill walking), and the view from the restaurant was breathtaking.

Note: If you prefer a location closer to the market & the pier, you can explore several options on booking.com, most of which are high-end resorts. The pocket-friendly ones are located around the cliff, away from the market area. Phi Phi Island Beach Resort, Villa 360, Holiday Inn Beach Resort, and Phi Phi Banyan Villa are some of the best ones on this island!

Leaving our luggage at the resort, we headed out in search of lunch and quickly found ourselves immersed in the island’s lively atmosphere. Even in the middle of the day, the narrow streets were buzzing with cafés, beachwear shops, bars, and travellers soaking in the laid-back vibe. We wandered into a tiny café, ordered a plate of Pad Thai, and couldn’t stop eyeing the coconut ice cream stall across the road. A friendly Mexican couple seated next to us struck up a conversation and insisted that we check out the famous Ibiza Pool Party later that evening. We polished off our Pad Thai in minutes before crossing over for generous bowls of creamy coconut ice cream.

With lunch done, we made our way towards the beach, eager for our first swim in the turquoise waters of Koh Phi Phi. We soon realised we had arrived at Ibiza Beach, right beside the venue where the pool party was already in full swing. The music was loud, the crowd was energetic, and the party was in full swing, but it wasn’t quite the vibe we were looking for. Instead, we found a quieter stretch of sand nearby, slipped into the crystal-clear water, and spent the afternoon soaking up the island’s tropical beauty.

Tip: If you’re a party lover, don’t miss the Ibiza Pool Party. With a beachfront swimming pool overlooking the Andaman Sea, lively DJs, an energetic crowd, and surprisingly affordable drinks, it’s one of the island’s most popular nightlife experiences and perfectly captures Koh Phi Phi’s carefree spirit.

After a relaxing afternoon at the beach, we returned to the resort and spent some time unwinding by the pool. As the sun began to set, we made our way to Tonsai Bay, about a 20-minute walk from our stay. This part of Koh Phi Phi Don has a more polished feel, lined with upscale resorts, stylish cafés, waterfront restaurants, and boutique stores. The souvenirs here are noticeably pricier too, so don’t expect much room for bargaining.

We stopped at Unni’s Restaurant, one of the island’s most popular dining spots, for a much-needed cup of freshly brewed coffee. Bright, airy, and beautifully designed, it’s as photogenic as it is welcoming. The extensive menu caters to every palate, featuring everything from authentic Thai dishes to Mexican, Swedish, and English favourites, making it an excellent choice whether you’re craving local flavours or something familiar.

After our coffee break, we wandered through the lively streets, tempted by the irresistible aromas drifting from the food stalls. We couldn’t resist sampling a few freshly prepared local snacks, and they didn’t disappoint. Street food on Koh Phi Phi Don is not only incredibly delicious but also surprisingly affordable. From grilled seafood and skewers to fresh fruit shakes and Thai desserts, every corner offers something worth trying. If you’re visiting the island, make sure to leave room for its vibrant street food scene.

If there’s one thing you shouldn’t miss on Koh Phi Phi, it’s the transformation that takes place after sunset. As the beaches come alive with music, fire shows, and buzzing beach bars, the island sheds its laid-back daytime persona and embraces an energetic nightlife that has made it famous across Thailand.

One of the best places to experience it is Carlito’s Beach Bar, regarded as one of the oldest and most iconic bars on the island. Grab one of the signature cocktail buckets, settle into a beanbag on the sand, and watch talented performers put on mesmerising fire shows against the backdrop of the Andaman Sea. As the night progresses, the music gets louder, the dance floor fills up, and the party spills onto the beach.

Just a short walk away is Slinky Beach Bar, home to some of the wildest parties on Koh Phi Phi. Set right on Loh Dalum Beach, this open-air venue is famous for its high-energy atmosphere, offering everything from dancing and body painting to mechanical bull rides and limbo competitions. The highlight of the evening is undoubtedly the spectacular 10 PM fire show, where performers twirl blazing staffs, leap through rings of fire, and put on one of the most thrilling displays on the island.

Whether you’re sipping cocktails by the sea or dancing barefoot on the sand, the nightlife on Koh Phi Phi is an experience in itself. We wrapped up our first day with music still echoing across the beach, already excited for the adventures that awaited us the next morning.

Day 2

Time for Island hopping!

The best way to do this is to book a day trip that covers all the islands of Koh Phi Phi and brings you back by evening. I did my share of online research, but it’s definitely more pocket-friendly when you book it with a local tour company, while on the island. We decided to go with The Only Morning Trip, which had a small kiosk in the market. It costs 2000 TBH (approximately 6000 INR) for 2 people, including breakfast and lunch.

We had to reach the pier by 8 AM – and till then, we had no freaking idea of what we were gonna see!

The speedboat was waiting for us at Tonsai Bay, with around 12 people, including us, and 2 guides on board. We hopped on and kick-started our journey to explore the paradise hidden in this part of the world.

Crossing the Viking Cave on our way, our first stop of the day was Bamboo Island, located about 5 km from Koh Phi Phi Don. Known locally as Koh Pai, it is the northeasternmost island in the Phi Phi archipelago and one of the most beautiful islands in Krabi Province.

As our boat approached the shore, the island looked like a postcard brought to life. A pristine ribbon of powdery white sand encircled the island, meeting crystal-clear turquoise waters that shimmered under the tropical sun. Away from the beach, the island’s interior is carpeted with lush tropical vegetation, including the bamboo groves that inspired its name. Peaceful, uncrowded, and wonderfully untouched, Bamboo Island offers a welcome escape from the livelier beaches of Phi Phi Don, making it the perfect spot to swim, snorkel, or simply relax beneath the shade of swaying trees.

After spending about an hour on Bamboo Island, we set sail once again, cruising through the Andaman Sea towards our next stop. What made the journey just as memorable as the destinations was the ever-changing colour of the water. One moment it was a deep sapphire blue, the next it shimmered in shades of turquoise and emerald. It felt as though an artist was painting the sea anew with every passing mile.

Towering limestone cliffs rose dramatically from the water, their rugged faces draped in dense tropical greenery. Every turn revealed another breathtaking landscape, making it impossible to look away. The clouds drifted lazily across the sky, occasionally hiding the sun before allowing its rays to illuminate the sea in brilliant hues once again. The speedboat bounced gently over the waves as laughter and excited chatter filled the air.

Our next stop was Loh Samah Bay. As soon as we arrived, the boat crew handed out snorkelling gear and invited us to jump into the crystal-clear water. Within moments, we found ourselves surrounded by schools of colourful tropical fish, gliding effortlessly through the warm sea. Floating amid the vibrant marine life, with dramatic limestone cliffs towering above us, felt like stepping into an underwater paradise.

And, of course, we also visited Maya Bay! With clear crystal waters, white sand powder, and lush tropical vegetation, Maya Bay gathers all the postcard clichés in one place. My heart skipped a beat while I stared at the thin stretch from a distance, wondering how it would have been there on the island!

It’s sad to realise how humans often forget their limits and ruin what nature has blessed us with. It’s said that after “The Beach” was released, millions of people flocked to see this gorgeous island, destroying the ecosystem of this place. Tourists have been banned from visiting Maya Bay for an indefinite period, and now, you can only enjoy its beauty from afar!

It was around 5 PM by the time we returned to Koh Phi Phi Don, but my mind was still lost in the incredible landscapes we had explored throughout the day. As I walked along the pier after stepping off the boat, I could almost imagine the towering limestone cliffs rising out of the sea once again, as if we were still weaving our way through those impossibly clear waters. It all felt wonderfully surreal, like waking up from a dream I wasn’t quite ready to leave behind.

Back at the resort, we washed off the saltwater, changed into fresh clothes, and headed out once more, determined not to miss the island’s golden hour. The beach had taken on a completely different mood. The day’s crowds had begun to thin, the sea had turned shades of gold and amber, and the sky slowly transformed into a canvas of soft pinks and oranges.

We strolled along the shoreline with the waves gently lapping at our feet, replaying our favourite moments from the day. We talked about the towering cliffs, the vibrant marine life, the hidden coves, and the unbelievable colours of the Andaman Sea. Our sun-kissed cheeks were proof of a day well spent, and as the sun dipped below the horizon, we couldn’t help but feel grateful for having experienced one of Thailand’s most spectacular island escapes.

Then, almost without warning, the sky seemed to begin a quiet conversation with the sea. Streaks of orange, purple, crimson, and scarlet melted into one another, painting the horizon with colours so vivid that it looked like the masterpiece of a renowned artist. Sitting on the beach, my friend and I watched the spectacle unfold in silence before drifting into conversations about life, travel, and what it meant to have known each other for over two decades. Twenty-four years of friendship had brought us to this tiny island in the Andaman Sea, and in that moment, everything felt beautifully complete. It was one of those rare evenings that become memories for a lifetime.

We had completely lost track of time. By the time darkness settled over the island, it was already 8 PM. Beach clubs had come alive, music echoed across the shoreline, and groups of travellers gathered to celebrate another tropical night in Koh Phi Phi.

Before dinner, we grabbed a few freshly made sushi rolls from a roadside stall and wandered through the lively market, picking up postcards and souvenirs to take a little piece of the island home with us. Later, we treated ourselves to dinner at one of the island’s waterfront restaurants, raising a toast to an unforgettable 48 hours filled with turquoise waters, towering limestone cliffs, hidden beaches, and countless moments of awe.

The next morning began with an early breakfast by the pool before it was finally time to leave. It was hard to believe that just two days earlier, Koh Phi Phi had been a place on my travel bucket list. Forty-eight hours had passed in the blink of an eye, yet the memories we made felt timeless. As our ferry pulled away from the island, I realised that while we were leaving Koh Phi Phi behind, a part of it would travel home with us forever.
