Best Time to Visit Vietnam: A Month-By-Month Guide

If you’re planning a trip and wondering when to go, this guide will help you figure out the best time to visit Vietnam based on weather, regions, and the kind of experience you’re after.

ba na hills 8 days itinerary vietnam

If I had to pick one country I could return to over and over again without ever getting tired of it, it would be Vietnam. Four trips in, and I’m already planning my fifth — which probably tells you everything you need to know. There’s just something about Vietnam that keeps pulling me back. Maybe it’s the street food that somehow tastes better every single time, the dramatic landscapes that shift from misty mountains to golden beaches, or the warmth of the people that makes every journey feel personal.

But one thing I’ve learned after visiting Vietnam in different seasons is this: timing really shapes the kind of trip you’ll have.

Vietnam isn’t the kind of destination where one season fits all. Stretching long and narrow along the eastern edge of Southeast Asia, the country covers an incredible range of climates and landscapes — from the cool northern highlands and limestone bays to the tropical south and island escapes. That means the best time to visit really depends on what you want from your trip. Beach days in Da Nang, trekking in Sapa, cruising through Halong Bay, or island hopping in Phu Quoc all come with their own sweet spots on the calendar.

When to visit North Vietnam (Hanoi, Sapa & Halong Bay)?

North Vietnam has some of the largest seasonal shifts in the country, so the experience can feel completely different depending on when you go. You’ll find cool winters, hot and humid summers, misty mountain mornings, and some of the most beautiful shoulder seasons anywhere in Southeast Asia.

In general, the best time to visit North Vietnam is during spring (March to April) and autumn (September to November), when the weather is usually at its most comfortable. Expect pleasant temperatures, clearer skies, and ideal conditions for everything from city walks in Hanoi to cruises in Halong Bay and treks in Sapa.

That said, each season has its own charm.

Winter (December to February) can get surprisingly cold in the north — especially if you’re expecting tropical weather throughout Vietnam. In Hanoi, the days are cool and grey, while in mountain regions like Sapa, temperatures can drop dramatically at night, sometimes going as low as 4°C or even lower. It’s not unusual for Sapa to feel properly wintry, and on rare occasions, the surrounding highlands even see a light dusting of snow. If you’re travelling during this time, warm layers are definitely essential.

Summer (May to August) brings the opposite extreme: hot, humid, and often intense, particularly in the cities. I’ve been to Hanoi in July, and during the day, it was seriously hot — the kind of heat that makes you want to slow down, duck into cafés, and plan your sightseeing around air-conditioning and iced coffee stops. But interestingly, I found the evenings much more pleasant, and Hanoi at night still had that lively, atmospheric charm that makes it such a fun city to wander through.

I also visited Sapa in May, and it was absolutely beautiful. The hills were lush and green, the rice terraces were beginning to come alive, and the whole region had that fresh, vibrant feel that makes you want to stay outdoors all day. It was a wonderful time for exploring — not too cold, not too harsh, and incredibly scenic. If Sapa is high on your list, late spring can be such a rewarding time to go.

Then there’s autumn, which is personally one of my favourite times to experience the north. I visited Hanoi in October, and the weather was really lovely — warm without being exhausting, much less humid, and just generally easy to enjoy. It’s the kind of weather that makes you want to walk more, sit by the lake a little longer, and soak in the city at a slower pace. October also works really well for Halong Bay, where calmer conditions and milder temperatures make cruising much more enjoyable.

If you’re looking for the most comfortable all-around season for Hanoi, Sapa, and Halong Bay together, I’d say March to April and September to November are your safest bets.

Culture, Coffee and Countryside: Vietnam for Couples

When to visit Central Vietnam (Hue, Da Nang & Hoi An)?

Central Vietnam is one of those places that can look dreamy in photos all year round, with golden lantern-lit streets, beach days in Da Nang, and slow afternoons in Hue, but the weather here can be a little more unpredictable than it seems. If you’re planning to spend time along this stretch of coast, timing can make a big difference to the kind of trip you have.

In general, the best time to visit Central Vietnam is from February to August, when the region sees its driest and sunniest weather. These are the months when beach days, city exploring, café hopping, and wandering around Hoi An’s old town are all at their easiest. Expect lots of sunshine, warm temperatures, and long, bright days that are perfect for sightseeing.

That said, Central Vietnam gets very hot, especially as you move into late spring and summer.

I’ve been to this part of Vietnam around May and June, and it was intensely hot during the day — the kind of heat where you quickly learn to slow your pace, take long lunch breaks indoors, and save your walking for later. But what I actually enjoyed was that the afternoons and evenings felt much nicer, especially once the sun softened a little. That made it easier to enjoy places like Hoi An and Da Nang, where some of the best moments are in the slower hours anyway — evening strolls, riverside dinners, and just soaking in the atmosphere after sunset.

July and August are often the hottest months, with sunny days hovering around 30°C or more, making this a popular time for beach-focused trips. If you don’t mind the heat and plan your days well, it can still be a great time to visit — especially if your itinerary includes a mix of coast, cafés, and relaxed sightseeing rather than nonstop exploring in the middle of the day.

The more unpredictable period comes during the wet and typhoon season, which generally runs from August to November. Coastal areas like Hoi An, Da Nang, and Hue can be affected by heavy rain, flooding, and occasional typhoons. While it’s hard to predict exactly when storms will hit, this is definitely the season when weather can interfere with travel plans.

I also spent time in Central Vietnam in October, and I absolutely loved it. That trip was especially memorable because it was when I hosted a group trip in Vietnam, travelling through this part of the country with a bunch of strangers!

So while February to August is generally the safest window for good weather, I wouldn’t completely rule out the shoulder months if your plans are flexible and you don’t mind a bit of unpredictability.

When to visit South Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City & the Mekong Delta)?

South Vietnam is one of the easiest parts of the country to visit year-round, thanks to its consistently warm temperatures and tropical climate. The dry season usually runs from December to May, while the rainy season lasts from June to November. Even during the wetter months, rain often arrives in short, dramatic bursts rather than all-day downpours, so it usually doesn’t affect travel as much as people expect.

I visited Ho Chi Minh City in December on my very first trip to Vietnam, and I absolutely fell in love with the weather. It was warm, sunny, and just really pleasant for walking around the city, café hopping, and soaking in the energy of Saigon. Around the same time, I also travelled to Da Lat and Nha Trang, and it felt like such a lovely season to explore the south.

That said, March to May can get very hot, so if you prefer milder weather, December to February is an especially great time to visit.

The best month to visit really depends on what kind of experience you’re after and which part of the country you want to explore.

May

Best for: lush landscapes, early summer beach trips, and mountain escapes
Ideal for: nature lovers, couples, photographers, and active travellers

May is when Vietnam starts to feel a little more vibrant, green, and summery, especially if you love nature, dramatic scenery, and that fresh, just-before-peak-summer energy. It definitely starts getting hotter, particularly in central and southern Vietnam, but it’s also a really rewarding time to travel if you’re happy to pace your days around the heat.

This is also such a beautiful month for the north, especially if mountain landscapes are your thing. I visited Sapa in May, and it was absolutely beautiful. The hills were lush and green, the scenery felt incredibly fresh and alive, and it was such a lovely time to be outdoors. If you’re into trekking, rice terraces, and misty mountain views, this is a wonderful time to head there.

June

Ideal for: beach lovers, families, couples, and summer holiday travellers

June is a great time to visit Vietnam if your trip is built around beaches, sunshine, and a slower summer pace. It does get hot and humid, especially in parts of the country, but if your itinerary leans toward the coast or nature, it can still be a really enjoyable month to travel.

This is the kind of month where Vietnam feels best when you slow down a little. Think lazy beach mornings, long seafood lunches, cave adventures, sunset swims, and evenings spent outdoors once the heat eases off. It’s not the best month for being out sightseeing all afternoon, but if you plan your days well, June can be such a fun and rewarding time to visit.

July

Best for: beach holidays, family trips, and tropical summer vibes
Ideal for: families, beach lovers, and travellers who don’t mind the heat

July is definitely one of the hottest months in Vietnam, but if you’re coming for a proper summer holiday, it can still work really well, especially if your trip is built around the coast, cooler mountain escapes, and slower sightseeing. It’s the kind of month where you want to travel a little smarter, think early starts, long lunches, shaded cafés, and evenings outdoors once the heat settles.

I’ve been to Hanoi in July, and during the day, it was extremely hot, the kind of heat that really slows you down. But what surprised me was how much I still enjoyed it because the nights felt far more pleasant, and the city really came alive in the evenings. Hanoi after sunset, with its food streets, cafés, and buzzing atmosphere, still felt incredibly fun and worth experiencing.

Best places to visit in Vietnam in July

  • Sapa: If you want a break from the heat, Sapa is one of the best places to head in July. The mountain air feels fresher, the rice terraces are beautifully green, and it’s a lovely time for trekking, nature stays, and scenic slow travel.

  • Nha Trang: Nha Trang is a great pick for travellers who want sunshine, sea views, island boat trips, and a proper beach-break atmosphere.
  • Phong Nha: For something a little different, Phong Nha is a brilliant option in July if you want caves, countryside views, river activities, and a more adventurous side of Vietnam.

Best things to do in July

  • Spend a few days in Sapa or Da Lat if you want cooler weather and scenic mountain views
  • Enjoy beach and pool days in places like Da Nang or Nha Trang
  • Explore cities like Hanoi or Hoi An in the early mornings or evenings, when they feel much more enjoyable
  • Add Phong Nha to your itinerary for cave adventures, countryside cycling, and a more active escape
  • Stay somewhere with a pool, spa, or beautiful views, so the hotter afternoons feel more relaxing

July is a great month if you’re happy to travel around the heat instead of fighting it. And if you mix coastal destinations with cooler places like Sapa or Da Lat, it can actually make for a really fun and well-balanced Vietnam trip.

August

Best for: resort stays, island escapes, and relaxed travel
Ideal for: couples, families, and travellers looking for slower-paced holidays

August can be a little more mixed in Vietnam, depending on where you go, but it can still be a really lovely month for a restful, slower kind of trip. Some parts of the country begin to see more rain, especially in Central Vietnam, later in the season, but there are still plenty of places that work really well if you keep your itinerary a little flexible.

This is a great month for travellers who don’t mind the occasional tropical shower in exchange for fewer crowds, lush scenery, quieter stays, and that soft monsoon mood that can actually make Vietnam feel even more beautiful. If you lean into the slower pace, August can be a really rewarding time to visit.

Best places to visit in Vietnam in August

  • Da Lat: Da Lat is one of the best places to consider in August if you want a break from the heavier heat. It’s perfect for cooler weather, cosy cafés, flower gardens, pine-covered hills, and slower mountain-town days.
  • Ho Chi Minh City: Even with the occasional rain, Ho Chi Minh City still works really well in August, especially if you enjoy café hopping, food spots, rooftop bars, shopping, and that big-city energy. Rain showers usually come and go quickly, so you can still fit a lot into your day.
  • Nha Trang: If you still want some coast in your itinerary, Nha Trang can be a good option for beach time, seaside stays, island boat trips, and a more relaxed resort-style break.
  • Mekong Delta: August can actually be a beautiful time to visit the Mekong Delta, especially if you enjoy lush scenery, boat rides, local villages, fruit orchards, and dramatic monsoon skies.
  • Sapa: The north can also be beautiful this time of year, and Sapa remains a great option if you want green mountain landscapes, trekking, and cooler scenery compared to the cities.

Best things to do in August

  • Stay in a resort or beautiful hotel and enjoy slower, more restful travel days
  • Spend time exploring cafés, local markets, and food spots, especially in cities like Ho Chi Minh City or Da Lat
  • Take scenic countryside drives through mountain or rural regions like Da Lat, Sapa, or the Mekong Delta
  • Photograph moody skies, rain-washed streets, and lush green landscapes, which can look especially beautiful this time of year
  • Add boat rides or river experiences to your itinerary, especially in the Mekong Delta
  • Keep your plans light and flexible, so the occasional rain shower feels like part of the experience rather than a disruption

August is a lovely month if you want your Vietnam trip to feel slower, greener, and a little less polished, in the best possible way. It’s especially good for travellers who enjoy atmosphere, scenery, and quieter experiences over a packed, fast-paced itinerary.

September

Best for: shoulder-season travel, fewer crowds, and scenic coastal escapes
Ideal for: couples, photographers, and travellers looking for quieter trips

September is one of those months that can be a little underrated, but it can actually be a really lovely time to visit Vietnam if you’re after fewer crowds, softer light, and a more relaxed pace. While the weather can still be a little mixed depending on where you go, this is often a great month for travellers who don’t mind a bit of unpredictability in exchange for greener landscapes, moodier skies, and quieter beaches.

It’s a beautiful month for slow travel, especially if you prefer your trips to feel a little less rushed and a little more atmospheric. Vietnam in September has that slightly softer, in-between-season charm that can feel incredibly rewarding if you choose the right places.

  • Da Nang: September can be a lovely time to enjoy Da Nang if you’re after a mix of beach time, city comfort, seafood, cafés, and relaxed coastal energy. It works especially well if you want a slower beach break without peak-season crowds.
  • Hue: If you’re drawn to history, architecture, and a quieter pace of travel, Hue is a really lovely option in September. It’s perfect for imperial sites, riverside walks, old temples, and cultural exploring without the intensity of peak summer heat.
  • Quy Nhon: Quy Nhon is one of those places that still feels a little more under the radar, which makes it especially appealing in September. It’s ideal for peaceful beaches, coastal drives, seafood, and a much more laid-back seaside vibe.
  • Mui Ne: If you’re looking for beach days with a little variety, Mui Ne is a great option for sea views, sand dunes, breezy cafés, and a relaxed coastal atmosphere that works really well for slower travel.
  • Ho Tram & Long Hai: These make such an easy and underrated coastal escape, especially if you want something a little more low-key. They’re perfect for beach resorts, quiet seaside stays, seafood lunches, and easy weekend-style travel.

  • Plan a Vietnam trip that feels more relaxed, scenic, and restorative rather than packed with nonstop sightseeing

September is a really lovely month if you want your Vietnam trip to feel quieter, moodier, and a little more offbeat, especially if you enjoy coastal scenery, slower travel, and destinations that feel less overdone.

October

Best for: city breaks, autumn weather, and meaningful slow travel
Ideal for: couples, solo travellers, friend groups, and shoulder-season travellers

October is honestly one of my favourite months to be in Vietnam. The weather in many parts of the country starts feeling much more comfortable again, especially if you enjoy travelling without extreme heat or heavy humidity.

I’ve been to Hanoi in October, and it was really lovely. Warm enough to enjoy being outside, but not exhausting in the way summer can be. It’s the kind of weather that makes you want to walk more, sit in cafés longer, and really soak up the atmosphere.

Best places to visit in Vietnam in October

  • Hanoi: October is one of the nicest times to enjoy Hanoi properly. It’s perfect for walking around the Old Quarter, visiting temples, sitting by Hoan Kiem Lake, and spending long afternoons café hopping.
  • Hoi An: Hoi An always has its charm, but in October it feels especially atmospheric for lantern-lit evenings, riverside dinners, tailoring, and slow wandering through the Old Town.
  • Da Nang: Da Nang is beautiful in October if you want a trip that combines coastal views, seafood, a relaxed city vibe, and easy access to nearby destinations.
  • Ninh Binh: For a more scenic and peaceful escape, Ninh Binh is lovely this time of year for boat rides, countryside stays, and landscapes that feel calm and cinematic.
  • Halong Bay: October is one of the nicer months for cruising, with milder weather that makes being out on the water more enjoyable.
  • Da Lat: If you want a cooler mountain stop on your trip, Da Lat is a great option in October for fresh air, scenic drives, and slower, cosy travel days.

Best things to do in October

  • Explore cities on foot, especially places like Hanoi or Hoi An, where the weather feels much more comfortable
  • Enjoy food tours, cafés, and slow cultural days, without the harsh summer heat
  • Take a cruise through Halong Bay, especially if you want scenery, fresh air, and a more relaxed pace
  • Wander through Hoi An in the evenings, when the lanterns, riverfront, and old streets feel especially magical
  • Plan a Vietnam trip that feels a little more cultural, scenic, and meaningful, rather than purely beach-focused

October is such a lovely month if you want your trip to feel comfortable, atmospheric, and beautifully balanced, especially if you enjoy travelling a little slower and soaking up each place properly.

November

Best for: comfortable weather, scenic travel, and classic Vietnam itineraries
Ideal for: couples, honeymooners, families, and first-time visitors

November is one of the most comfortable and well-balanced months to visit Vietnam. The weather in many regions is pleasant, manageable, and ideal for sightseeing, making it a brilliant month for first-time visitors looking to see a little bit of everything. This is a particularly good time if you want to combine north and south Vietnam in one trip, or if you’re looking for a month where city days, nature escapes, and beach time can all work nicely together. It’s one of those months where Vietnam feels especially easy to travel through.

Best places to visit in Vietnam in November

  • Hanoi: November is a really lovely time to enjoy Hanoi, with weather that’s usually comfortable enough for walking tours, café days, food adventures, and sightseeing without too much heat or humidity.

Ideal for: couples, families, solo travellers, and holiday-season getaways

December is such a lovely time to visit Vietnam, especially if you’re coming from somewhere cold and looking for a warm, feel-good escape. best time to visit vietnam

If there’s one thing Vietnam does really well, it’s proving that there’s never really a bad time to go!

Because of how long and geographically diverse the country is, Vietnam can genuinely be visited all year round. While one region might be dealing with rain or heat, another could be sitting in its absolute sweet spot. And that’s what makes planning a trip here so exciting, there’s almost always somewhere in Vietnam that feels just right for the kind of experience you’re after.

Whether you’re dreaming of lantern-lit evenings in Hoi An, beach days in Phu Quoc, mountain views in Sapa, or chaotic little food adventures in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam has a way of delivering something special in every season. For me, it’s one of those rare places I can keep returning to and still never feel done with. And honestly, that’s probably the best sign of all.
